INT Logistics UK celebrates Clean Air Day 2018

For Clean Air Day 2018 we’ve been thinking about how to reduce our emissions.

Heavy duty vehicles contribute to 5% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, but with a few tricks up our sleeve, we’re working towards changing this.

Here are our top five ways:

1) Driver training: we only employ the best drivers at our company – effective driving can reduce co2 emissions by up to 7%.

2) Fleet renewal: we use the latest fuel-efficient Euro-6 trucks – fleet renewal is the quickest way to reduce emissions. At the moment, about 98% of all lorries rely on Diesel, but many manufacturers have announced their plans for zero emission vehicles.

3) Rigorous and effective planning: each journey our trucks make is meticulously planned by our team of successful Transport Planners, covering only the miles we need to.

4) Effective loading of trailers: when possible we see that our trailers are not left with any disused empty spaces.

5) Looking after our trucks: regular servicing and tyre pressure checks keep our trucks in tip-top condition, therefore reducing emissions.

Clean Air Day has also provoked several proposals concerning Clean Air Zones throughout the country.

Southampton are proposing to charge all non-Euro VI lorries £100 to enter its Clean Air Zone, while Birmingham have announced plans to consult on a Clean Air Zone to cover all roads within the A4540 Middleway ring road. Other cities including Leeds and Edinburgh are also putting together similar plans.

The RHA have been campaigning against the introductions of charges for Euro V until the end of 2024 – however, the European Commission have proposed a drop of 15% of emissions from 2019 to 2025. What’s your take on clean air zones?
